W hen I was growing up there was no racism in Germany. The sixth Democratic primary debate seemed striking for its lack of artifice and frequent evidence of intelligent life on stage. Many of the incidents involved women being surrounded and assaulted by groups of men on the street. It must not be allowed to be repeated and the perpetrators must be punished. The past hundred years for Germany and the Germans—a mere blip in the sweep of history—have been exceptional.
